Day 6:
Today we ate breakfast, and
had some free time until 2:30, when we were to meet Helen in the lobby so she
could escort us to the police station. In China you apply for your passport at
the police station. You can tell that Helen has done this many times, she is
all business and no play when we are getting our paperwork done. We went to the
second floor to have her photo taken, and then we had to wait about 30 minutes
for them to issue the official adoption certificate. This will allow Helen to
pick up the passport on Monday. Helen informed us not to take any photos inside
the police station, because it wasn’t allowed. While we waited we talked with
different couples from the Holt International adoption agency. They were from
Virginia and had adopted a little girl. It’s very encouraging to met other
couples and share our stories. It never surprises me that we were all brought
together for a reason, and adoption is the center of that.
After
the police station we had the rest of the day free. We hung out in our room,
and grabbed dinner at McDonalds.
Before we went to the police station we walked to a nearby
park. This park was just across the street from our hotel. Anytime we go out,
we are the center of attention. I have never had that many people stare at me
before. I don’t like it at all….. I
don’t know if it’s because we look different and they’re intrigued by it, or if
it’s because Brian is so tall and he has blue eyes, or if it’s because we have
an Asian baby with us. They go out of their way to stare at us. I mean walk
completely in front of us and just stare….. I usually comment “yes, American’s
with Asian baby” or “yes, big tall white man with a Chinese baby.” Brian tells
me to ignore it, and I’ve tired but it does make me angry. Mostly because the
looks are death looks. Like they are mad that two American’s have come over and
adopted a baby. Maybe I’m just paranoid. Or maybe it’s the mother bear inside
of me.
